Prompt, Evidence-Based Respiratory Care

When to See a Doctor for Cold, Flu, or COVID

Cold, flu, and COVID-19 are caused by viruses — not bacteria — so not every illness needs antibiotics. But many patients are unsure when home rest is enough versus when expert medical evaluation matters. At Patel Primary Care in Wildomar, we help you make that decision and provide rapid, effective treatment when needed.

Time is critical with respiratory illness. Antiviral medications like Paxlovid and Tamiflu are most effective when started within 3 to 5 days of symptom onset. Dr. Reenaben Patel offers same-day and next-day sick visits, on-site rapid testing, and personalized treatment plans to help you recover faster and avoid serious complications.

Whether you're battling a lingering cold, worried about flu complications, or exposed to COVID-19, we're here to diagnose accurately, treat appropriately, and support your recovery. New patients welcome.

Warning Signs You Should Seek Care Immediately

Most cold and flu symptoms resolve in 7–10 days with rest and fluids. But these signs mean you need urgent evaluation.

High Fever 3+ Days

A fever that persists beyond 3 days or returns after improving suggests a secondary infection or complication that needs evaluation and treatment.

Difficulty Breathing

Shortness of breath, rapid breathing, or chest tightness can indicate pneumonia or other lower respiratory complications requiring immediate care.

Chest Pain or Pressure

Chest pain when coughing, along with shortness of breath, suggests possible pneumonia or viral myocarditis and requires urgent evaluation.

Dehydration Signs

Extreme thirst, dry mouth, minimal urination, or severe weakness suggest dangerous dehydration that needs medical intervention.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Respiratory Illness

Do I need antibiotics for a cold or flu?
Most colds and flu are caused by viruses, not bacteria, so antibiotics are not effective and can contribute to antibiotic resistance. Dr. Patel will examine you and run rapid testing to confirm whether antibiotics are appropriate. Antiviral medications like Paxlovid and Tamiflu work differently and are effective for certain viral respiratory illnesses.
When should I come in versus stay home?
Come in if you have high fever lasting more than 3 days, difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure, signs of dehydration, or symptoms that are worsening after initial improvement. If you have mild cold symptoms and are staying hydrated, rest at home may be appropriate—call us to discuss. We offer same-day sick visits when urgent care is needed.
Do you offer COVID-19 testing?
Yes. We perform rapid COVID-19 tests in the office and can have results within 15 minutes. We also offer rapid flu and strep tests. If you suspect COVID-19, call ahead so we can take precautions to protect our staff and other patients.
Can you prescribe Paxlovid or Tamiflu?
Yes. Dr. Patel prescribes Paxlovid (for COVID-19) and Tamiflu (for influenza) when appropriate. These antivirals work best when started early—ideally within 3 to 5 days of symptom onset. Time is critical, so call us immediately if you suspect flu or COVID.
Can I get a same-day appointment for a sick visit?
Yes. We reserve same-day sick visit slots for acute respiratory illness. Call 951-696-5837 as soon as your symptoms start to check availability. We often can see you the same day or within 24 hours.
